Israel's underworld comes into prominence with mob hit By Ira Sharkansky
JERUSALEM—David ben Gurion once looked to the future, said that Israel would be a normal country only when it acquired prostitutes and thieves.
Either ben Gurion was wearing blinders, or he was unduly optimistic. The country has long met his criteria for being normal.
In recent days, it has also scored high on another dimension that we may call normal: the fascination with a man and his family said to be among the most prominent participants in organized crime.
Yaacov Alperon left the court house where he was attending a hearing about his son, accused of intimidation and violence. He never made it to his next destination, due to his car exploding on a Tel Aviv street.
Every day since the country's media have devoted considerable space and time to his life and that of his family, including numerous previous attempts on his life and those of his brothers, their businesses on either side of the line that separates the legal and illegal, and their own efforts to punish competitors. Alperon's funeral attracted hundreds or thousands, depending on the source, and produced yet another round of pictures and commentary. Prominent were members of other underworld families who came to pay their respects, as well as uniformed and undercover police and their electronic equipment.
The sobbing widow urged her family to avoid revenge. One brother said that punishment was in the hands of the Almighty, and not the family. Another relative promised that the guilty individual would be separated from his head and his limbs, presumably by someone in the family.
Commentators have been busy. Do Israelis romanticize their most prominent criminals? Why is it necessary to devote so much energy to speculating who did it, and what the family will do in response? Does the public really want to hear recorded interviews, from years past, in which the deceased or his relatives proclaimed their innocence of everything, in language indicating their adherence to religious traditions?
The media likes action. The lives and problems of the famous assure high ratings in audience surveys. Some of the people involved know how to express themselves. Their lives are exciting. They drive nice cars and live in what some reporters call "palaces." There is no indication that the deceased, his relatives, or their enemies fit the model of Robin Hood: robbing from the rich to give to the poor. Their businesses include gambling, loan sharking, money laundering, intimidation, prostitution, and muscling into activities that are ostensibly legal, like concessions for garbage collection and recycling.
Some attention is paid to the problems of those fated to be neighbors of the famous. Family "soldiers" loiter around their apartment building and may frighten other tenants. The prospect of a media extravaganza at the entrance may, at the least, be inconvenient. Worse is the prospect of a bomb in the parking lot.
The most severe criticism focuses on how the underworld implements the death penalty for misbehavior. The Israeli style is not isolated killings in restaurants, or disappearances with bodies dumped in the wastelands as in Chicago, Boston, New York, or New Jersey. The action here is on public streets. The most recent killing came from a bomb attached to Alperon's car, and detonated by remote control. Others have come from drive-by sprays from machine guns, typically by the second rider on a speeding motorcycle. There have been satchel bombs detonated at the entrances to homes or businesses, as well as a shooting on a crowded beach.
Occasionally it is innocent bystanders, rather than, or in addition to the target who suffer injury or death. The most recent case was more fortunate than others. A young boy waiting at a bus stop, and the driver of a nearby car were brought to the emergency room with repairable damage.
The police defend themselves against charges of incompetence and inaction. They say that they know a great deal about the underworld, and hint that they know who performed this latest deed. They could do more with additional resources. They do not have anything like the capacities used by security services in the West Bank, Gaza, and elsewhere. Targeted killings are not in the repertoire of the domestic police.
There is a difference between knowledge and evidence. What the police know may not be strong enough to obtain convictions. When the police have information that someone in the underworld is planning to assassinate someone else, they warn the intended victim. Does the public really want the police to provide round-the-clock protection for the nation's criminals?
The police does want the underworld to adopt other rules for its governance. Not in public places, please. Dead and injured civilians cause problems for all of us.

A Dead Sea run and a bike ride
worthy of a L'chaim—and a Skål!
EIN BOKEK, Israel —The alarm clock shows 2 a.m. Fully awake, I get out of the hotel bed in this community at the Dead Sea and dress in my running gear. My husband Rafi is also up and preparing himself. A glance out the window shows us the shady mountains surrounding the Dead Sea.
There is only time to grab a quick cup of coffee and then we are ready to go. The car takes us through the silent hotel area where a few people are still returning from their nightly enjoyment of the local clubs.
Six kilometers south of Ein Bokek we are pulling into a parking lot where sleepy guards point us to a space to leave our car. It is the wee hours of Saturday morning, November 15.
So how come that we are here at this unearthly hour of the day?
We came for the Ultimate Desert Challenge—an event including three different runs, the 10 kilometer, 19.5 kilometer and 30 kilometer. Rafi and I had chosen the 19.5 kilometer and the start was scheduled for 3:30 a.m. The 30K runners were already gone by 2:30 a.m.
An intimate group of approximately 60 people was waiting near the start line
for the signal to go. Some of the participants wore headlights in order to be able to see better in the dark hours of the morning. As for us. we decided to do with the light of the full moon although our headlights were in the pockets just in case.
The organizers provided the runners with a stick light to put on their hands to enable other runners to identify them.
Now my stomach was turning viciously. As always before an event my nerves were stepping up to a level of anxiety that is not normal. However, it was even more so this time as it was
the first time ever for me to run in the dark.
My dear husband calmed me down. He a much better runner than I. He promised to run with me at my pace.
The start was signalled and we were on the way. It takes a few minutes for the eyes to get used to the darkness and to visualize the surroundings. My stomach felt better once I was running. The trail was marked here and there with small stick lights.
The experience was overwhelming. The quiet around us was only broken now and again by the warnings of runners ahead of us shouting "big rocks on the trails" or "changes in altitude".
The desert showed itself from its most beautiful side. Never have I experienced something so unique. The kilometers passed more quickly than I could have imagined. Before I knew it. the finish line loomed there up ahead – 2 hours of running behind us. Rafi and I crossed the line together.
But if you think this was the end of our experience, you are wrong.
There was now a two-hour rest break until our next start.
The challenge ahead of us was a 40-kilometer bike competition in the desert, some of it on the same trails we had just ran on.
Quickly we changed into dry and clean bike clothes, then grabbed a tuna sandwich and a beer. It was six o'clock in the morning and, for some, a beer might not sound proper, but beer has proved itself to be one of the better assets after a hard work out.
I. as a born Dane, have no problem with a beer at any hour!!!
Pulling our bikes out of the car and getting them ready was the next step. More and more cars where now pulling into the parking area and we were soon surrounded with several hundred bikers arriving at the Dead Sea to participate. The bike challenge had two competitions — either a 40 kilometer ride or a 80 kilometer ride.
At 7:30 a.m., 750 bikers waited in line for the start of the 40k ride. Another 300 bikers had already started for the 80K. It was the biggest bike event up till now in Israel.
The sight was absolutely amazing.
Bikers of all ages and both genders were dressed in all the colors of the rainbow. The start was crowded with so many riders but after a couple of kilometers the line stretched out. The competition was defined as a couples ride so it was mandatory to start and finish together with your partner.
The route through the desert was again absolutely magnificent, although I think that it was more special and charming in the morning. The ride challenged us with rocks, sand and hills as obstacles along the way.
As a biker I am slightly better than Rafi whereas he out-performs me as a runner. So at some stages he was complaining when I surged forward going up hills while trying to overtake guys, some of them many years younger than me. It just gets my adrenalin running!!
After 2 hours and 27 minutes we crossed the finish line holding hands high up in the air. Since only two women participated in both of the challenges - running and biking I came in second. The other woman about 30 years younger than me.
As for our place as a couple we arrived ninth out of 40 couples in our age group, and overall 70th out of 176 mixed couples (man and women). It is difficult to explain the feeling of excitement that rolls through your veins. For anyone not doing sports I think it is quite difficult to comprehend. I do recommend that you try it out.

Biking from Metulla to Sha'ar Henegev in April in an attempt to raise money for the new High School in Sha'ar Hanegev, where students will be protected against the Kassam rockets fired by Hamas terrorists in nearby Gaza. Jewish Family Service Provides Thanksgiving Baskets to Families in Need
SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—Each Thanksgiving, the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service of San Diego delivers Thanksgiving baskets to families in need. By holding food drives, recruiting volunteers, and requesting donations, the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry delivered Thanksgiving baskets to more than 600 families this year—up from 200 families the year before.
Every year, Jewish Family Service requests donations of non-perishable food such as gravy, canned vegetables, pie mix, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and more to complete the Thanksgiving baskets. Grocery gift cards are also included to enable families to purchase turkeys. These families would be unable to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner without the help of the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry.
More than 35 girls from Girl Scout Troops 3955 and 5361 helped Jewish Family Service assemble the Thanksgiving baskets on Sunday, November 16 from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Tina Holmes, a parent of one of the Girl Scouts, described the opportunity by saying “We had a blast! I’m so proud of our girls. We explained to them that this is what Thanksgiving is all about.” Pictured above right are Scouts Joycelyn Logan and Monet Lawton who were among the participants.

SAN DIEGO—Since my wife retired from teaching last June, she has been compiling a seemingly endless "wants-to-do" list. She is literally surging with energy and she is driving me crazy!
First she enrolled us in a life-time series of "Dancing Together" classes taught by the luscious Rebecca Grohowski. Rebecca has the patience of a saint and she makes dancing fun. My wife has taken on the attitude of a field marshal. "Count," she commands. "Slow, quick, quick," she instructs. We have been to two recent weddings and a bar mitzvah, where not a single rumba, fox trot or tango was danced. At the affairs, there were two hired DJ’s and one live band. I can’t begin to comment on the music (?) played. Perhaps when my hearing returns, things will get better.
Then she enrolled us in a music appreciation class held at a church in Pacific Beach. For two and a half hours one day a week, we sit in a class of some 50-60 senior citizens and listen to bits and phrases of dour music composed by Liszt, not my all-time favorite composer. The excellent instructor shows us video clips of performances by unknown pianists. This is all reminiscent of a one credit music appreciation class I took long ago in college. Then there were no video tapes. Old Prof Luvass would drop a needle on a scratchy 33 1/3 LP and we would have to endure his humming of the main themes from Scheherazade. I like Scheherazade much better than unhummable Liszt.
My wife is busy scheduling classes of all sorts. She is manically taking painting lessons from the visually stunning Concetta Antico’s "Petite Salon of Art" in Mission Hills. I must say, Concetta is an excellent business woman, and I am told a consummate instructor. I can’t vouch for the latter, but I am sure that she has overly developed marketing skills. I judge this by the 12 to15 e-mails received from her each day offering new and ever-more expensive classes. My wife’s entire life savings is rapidly being drained away in the name of art. It is, after all, very important to delve into the techniques of painting "wet-on-wet" as practiced by the ancient masters.
Needless to say, all of this has inspired "us" to attended two student art shows and numerous gallery and museum exhibitions on both coasts. Particularly impressive was the exhibition of paintings by four women Impressionistic artists featured in San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum.
In between times, my energetic spouse is investigating new biking clubs, hiking clubs, bridge lessons and a host of other courses she has never before had the time to pursue. The other night she participated in the ladies Rosh Hodesh gathering. "Wouldn’t it be fun to attend the Rabbi’s book club, his meet and greet sessions, and a refresher course in Hebrew?" she asked me only this morning? Written or spoken?, I noncommittally half responded.
Are there enough days in the week for all of this activity?
For the past five months, she has been on a cleaning binge. First it was her office (which has really needed attention for the past 15 years). Then she graduated to closets (also in dire need). Now she is busy relining drawers and cabinet shelves. Wal-Mart can’t keep her supplied with a enough shelf lining paper. I would much more appreciate her taking a swipe at the garage. This morning she announced plans to clean the attic. Who knew we had an attic?
Right now, it must be 95 degrees and she is outside weeding. Once this was my domain. Now nothing in her sight is safe.
And oh yes, can I share my enthusiasm being awakened at 5:30 in the a.m. to be asked: "What would you like to eat next Thursday?" "What would you like to do next Sunday?" "What would you like to do when the sunrise comes this morning?" "Where should we travel next?" We have been out of state for three of the past five weeks. No dust has settled on our suitcases or my American Express card.
After having spent the past 38 years as a classroom teacher in the same high school along the Mexican border, I can hardly blame her for wanting to find new outlets for all her pent up energy and creativity. However, I don’t see falling off another bike or sky diving in my future. Maybe it was ill advised of me to talk her into retiring so soon. The road to hell is certainly paved with good intentions if not well thought out ones.
But wait. I hear the phone and I’ll bet it’s one of the neighbor ladies to whom my retired wife is suddenly giving swimming lessons. Remind me to ask the rabbi if there is a special prayer for the survival of a newly retired wife’s husband. Amen.

SAN DIEGO—You never know what celebrity you’re going to meet at the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival. At this year’s 5th event, they were out in droves – Ted Allen of Food Detectives, PBS’s Uncorked, and Top Chef, Joe Spellman, Master Sommelier, Chef Brian Malarkey from the award-winning Oceanaire, Casey Thompson, Chris Jacobson (CJ), and Richard Blais, contestants from Top Chef, and Gavin Kaysen, formerly of the Rancho Bernardo Inn who now calls NYC his home where he is the Executive Chef of the world renown Café Boulud.
But for me, Sam Zien (pictured with me at right) led the star-studded cast of culinary luminaries. Yup! Sam the Cooking Guy was as approachable as Willy, my black Labrador. You might remember Sam winning yet another Emmy for his episode entitled “Jewish” where he taught viewers about the synagogue, Torah and Bible. Watching him on the Discover Health channel prepare matzoh brei on TV made me kvell. He also demonstrated the differences between gefilte fish, knishes, and kugels. “I have the soul of the Jewish people in my heart. I am very proud to be Jewish, very proud of our people.” Sam is best known for cooking food that’s “big on taste and small in effort.” Sam makes everything possible in the kitchen taking recipes that seem behemoth and maddening and turning them into doable and delicious plates of envy. Fortunate are we that Sam calls San Diego home.
At the Grand Tasting Event on the Embarcadero that hosted 160 wine and spirit purveyors from throughout California, 70 San Diego top chefs, gourmet foods, and cookbook author signings, Sam was one of several celebrity judges who had the daunting task of deciding the winner of “Chef of the Fest” which fetched $50,000 in cash and prizes! Surprisingly, that top honor was bestowed upon the newbie culinary team of Crescent Heights, a brand spankin’ new restaurant in San Diego whose doors have been open for business only five weeks! More about them in a future column…Second place went to the team of The Oceanaire Seafood Room, third to Bondi, and fourth place Chile Co.
Besides the mish mash of tasting luscious varietals, gorging oneself on scrumptious food, and rubbing elbows with celebrities once touchable only on TV, this spectacular Food and Wine Festival is really about coming together with friends to enjoy the magnificent fruits of Life’s offerings. They are what I give thanks for this season…B’Tayavon

Magic Carpet Day Huge Success Southwestern Jewish Press, May 12, 1950, pages 1, 8
More than 150 people gathered at the Temple Center on April 30 at 9:30 a.m. in response to the call issued by the “Magic Carpet” Division of the United Jewish Fund in its “Keep the Miracle Alive” campaign.
After issuing instructions to the group of volunteers Morrie Douglas, chairman of the day, introduced Ida Nasatir who have an inspiring “kick off “ talk to the workers. Rabbi Morton J. Conh pronounced the blessing and sent them out.
Breaksfast was served the entire group by members of the Jolly Sixteen Club. Mrs. Rose Neumann, Lucille Rubel, Julia Kaufman, Eva Chenkin and Rose Gordon did a splendid job of feeding the crowd with bagel, lox and cheese, home baked cake and coffee.
More than $13,000 was collected in pledges and cash at the end of the day.
Magic Carpet Day is by no means the end of the 1950 fund drive. It will be necessary for greater efforts to be made if we are to reach the goal set. A great many people who gave in 1949 have not as yet given to the 1950 campaign. The sum estimated is $100,000 and a great deal of work will have to be done before this money is collected.
Before they began to carry out their assignment on Magic Carpet d”ay, the 157 “Miracle” Workers left pledges for $6,321.
Teams 16, 4, 15 and 3 led the Magic Carpet Parade. 16 brought in $2,186 from 49 contributors while 4 ran a close second with $1.151, but led in number of contributors with 78. Both were followed in a close race by Team 15 and Team 3, which raised $900 and $896 respectively. Other team standings were as follows:

With the campaign showing an overall 10% increase over 1949 two outstanding events raised the amount of the 1950 “Keep the Miracle alive” Campaign to over $140,000 as of Friday, May 5th, according to Murray D. Goodrich and Nathaniel Ratner, general campaign co-chairmen.
Magic Carpet Day, led by Morrie Douglas as chairman, designed to cover as many small contributors as possible, drew 154 workers last Sunday and raised $14,000 from 320 contributors. Considered one of the most outstanding events in San Diego’s campaign history, the success of the day has made everyone determined to make every effort to reach the goal.
Two outstanding spekers gave the Women’s Division another successful meeting, when Ida Nasatir and Esther Moorsteen told the story of the need of the 1950 “Keep the Miracle Alive” Campaign to over 160 women, who had gathered at the El Cortez Hotel.
Gathered to make their contribution to “Keep the Miracle Alive,” the ladies heard Mrs. Moorsteen dramatically tell of the people and institutions she saw in her travels through Europe and Israel—institutions created by monies raised by American Jewry.
“Without the money of American Jews,” she said, “these things could not have been created and many thousands of lives might have been lost.”
The Young People’s Division is continuing their efforts to raise their goal and to exceed 1949 giving. Perosnal contact is now being made with all young people in the city by Division workers, who expect to clean up their end of the campaign in the very near future.
Continuing to work, the Christian Committee drew national attention last week when Bishop Buddy’s remarks to the luncheon of the committee were sent as a news release throughout the country. Already $6,000 has been raised from Christian contributors, according to Charles Davies, chairman.
Goodrich and Ratner stated that the campaign could be over at the end of May, and that the Jewish Community of San Diego could over-subscribe their 1949 giving if the givers who contributed in 1949 would make their pledge in 1950 immediately. They pointed out that there is still over $80,000 to be contributed on the basis of the same contributions of 1949. Every effort will be made to get those contributions in before the end of May, they said.
Divison chairmen are urging everyone to make their contribution now, before “Clean Up Day,” when another force of workers will cover the entire city to ask each family which has not yet given to do so. They stated that it was time for every Jew in San Diego to bear his share of the responsibility.

The Temple center will be the scene of a “Political Rally Nite” on May 31, when candidates for local and state office will meet.
Sponsored by the Temple Beth Israel’s Men’s Club, the program will include the following candidates: James Roosevelt, Representative Clinton D. McKinnon, Representative Richard Nixon, Rear Admiral Leslie E. Gehres, USN, Ret., Alfred J. Iller, Representative Helen Gahagan Douglas, Senator fred Kraft and Robert F. Driver.
The entire community will be invited to attend. There will be no admission charge and no refreshments served.
This is the first in a series of projects planned by the Men’s Club to stimulate interest in its activities. Alan Lame, Prexy, and Maxwell Kaufman, V.P., are in charge of the “Political Rally Night” and pr9omise and interesting evening when all these candidates meet at the Temple Center, 7:30 p.m. on May 31. “Adventures in Jewish History” is sponsored by Inland Industries Group LP in memory of long-time San Diego Jewish community leader Marie (Mrs. Gabriel) Berg. JERUSALEM—David ben Gurion once looked to the future, said that Israel would be a normal country only when it acquired prostitutes and thieves.
EIN BOKEK, Israel —The alarm clock shows 2 a.m. Fully awake, I get out of the hotel bed in this community at the Dead Sea and dress in my running gear. My husband Rafi is also up and preparing himself. A glance out the window shows us the shady mountains surrounding the Dead Sea. 
The start was signalled and we were on the way. It takes a few minutes for the eyes to get used to the darkness and to visualize the surroundings. My stomach felt better once I was running. The trail was marked here and there with small stick lights. 
Pulling our bikes out of the car and getting them ready was the next step. More and more cars where now pulling into the parking area and we were soon surrounded with several hundred bikers arriving at the Dead Sea to participate. The bike challenge had two competitions — either a 40 kilometer ride or a 80 kilometer ride. 
The route through the desert was again absolutely magnificent, although I think that it was more special and charming in the morning. The ride challenged us with rocks, sand and hills as obstacles along the way. 
As for our place as a couple we arrived ninth out of 40 couples in our age group, and overall 70th out of 176 mixed couples (man and women). It is difficult to explain the feeling of excitement that rolls through your veins. For anyone not doing sports I think it is quite difficult to comprehend. I do recommend that you try it out.
SAN DIEGO—In tje parsha Vayaira, Hebrew Day students learned how Avraham and Sarah were known for their great hospitality. Students also wanted to enjoy the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, so the three-year-old classes came together for snack this week. SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—Each Thanksgiving, the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service of San Diego delivers Thanksgiving baskets to families in need. By holding food drives, recruiting volunteers, and requesting donations, the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry delivered Thanksgiving baskets to more than 600 families this year—up from 200 families the year before. 
SAN DIEGO—Since my wife retired from teaching last June, she has been compiling a seemingly endless "wants-to-do" list. She is literally surging with energy and she is driving me crazy!
But for me, Sam Zien (pictured with me at right) led the star-studded cast of culinary luminaries. Yup! Sam the Cooking Guy was as approachable as Willy, my black Labrador. You might remember Sam winning yet another Emmy for his episode entitled “Jewish” where he taught viewers about the synagogue, Torah and Bible. Watching him on the Discover Health channel prepare matzoh brei on TV made me kvell. He also demonstrated the differences between gefilte fish, knishes, and kugels. “I have the soul of the Jewish people in my heart. I am very proud to be Jewish, very proud of our people.” Sam is best known for cooking food that’s “big on taste and small in effort.” Sam makes everything possible in the kitchen taking recipes that seem behemoth and maddening and turning them into doable and delicious plates of envy. Fortunate are we that Sam calls San Diego home.
